Reading During Lockdown

The school library may be physically closed at the moment, but there are a number of ways in which we can help with your reading during lockdown.

Daily Stories with Mrs Faulkner

With kind permission from Chicken House Books, HarperCollins, Walker Books and Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Mrs Faulkner is posting daily book readings on Teams for every child to enjoy. She is currently reading:

Robins, Kingfishers and Jays - a variety of picture books

Owls and Kestrels - The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo and The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

Falcons and Eagles - The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargraves and Time travelling with a Hamster by Ross Welford

The recordings can be accessed from the library folder on the files tab in your crew's Teams page. See below for help.

Author websites

If you are enjoying the stories that Mrs Faulkner is reading, why not find out more about the authors who wrote them? You might find another book that you would like to read.

Michael Morpurgo - https://www.michaelmorpurgo.com/news/

Ross Welford - https://www.rosswelford.com/about/

Kiran Millwood Hargrave - https://www.kiranmillwoodhargrave.co.uk/

Book recommendations

If you are unsure about which book to read next, Mrs Faulkner is still available to make recommendations. Please email her at cathy.faulkner@standrewsprimary.org.uk, let her know what you've enjoyed so far and what your interests are and she'll get back to you with some ideas. Alternatively, take a look at:

Book deliveries

If you are a pupil of the school and are in need of a book, please do let Mrs Faulkner know by email (cathy.faulkner@standrewsprimary.org.uk). It may be possible for her to deliver it to your house during lockdown, depending on current regulations and demand.

Read books, watch author videos and listen to audio books for free!

You can find all sorts of great books to read and listen to on this site provided by the National Literacy Trust:

There is a new author of the week every week and plenty of activities to do too.

eAudio Books and eBooks

Lockdown is a perfect time to listen to audio books. Mrs Faulkner has listened to lots herself! If you are already a member of your local LibrariesWest library, you can borrow eAudio books and eBooks from BorrowBox completely free of charge. Find out more information here:

Now open!

Our wonderful library is now open again! Each crew will have their own week when they can safely visit the library at break times, return and borrow books or just enjoy reading in the magical woodland setting. The Kestrel crew will be the first to use the library in the week commencing 30th November. A selection of books will continue to be available in each classroom so that no one misses out.

The Reading Tree

A silver birch tree has magically appeared in the library but its branches are currently looking very bare. Each time children finish and return a book to the library, they will be invited to hang a paper leaf with the name of the book along with three words to describe it. Leaves will be available from the library or from individual classrooms so that all children can participate whether or not it is their turn to access the library. We're hoping that spring will come very early to the library. Watch this space!

Book Art

Mrs Faulkner has been busy turning old unusable books into works of art. See if you can spot the new additions in the pictures below. If you have any old books at home that are torn or have pages falling out or missing, she would be delighted to receive them so that she can add to the collection!

From the author

Lots of authors have written to the children at St Andrew's to tell us about their books and to inspire us to read and write. Come and look at what they've sent us!

Recommendations

Don't know what to read next? Mrs Faulkner can recommend some books you might like to try. You might like to take a look at her reading record to see what she's been reading too!
